Questions owners actually ask
Is it really legal to play Oktava without paying the societies?
Yes — for our catalog. Collecting societies can only charge for works from their repertoire. The Oktava catalog is original music we create ourselves, and it is not registered with any society — authors' or neighbouring-rights. Radio, Spotify or your own playlists are a different case: those do require a license.
Is this AI-generated music?
Yes — made with AI tools under the service's creative direction and registered with no collecting society. We're happy to walk you through how it's made: see “How our catalog is made”. The legal position doesn't depend on hiding anything — it depends on the catalog staying outside society repertoires, which is exactly what the certificate documents.
I got a letter from a collecting society. What do I do?
Reply that your location plays the Oktava catalog, and attach the certificate plus a playback log export. A ready reply template is in the dashboard. Societies can only claim payment for their repertoire — your documents show it isn't being played.
Why can't I just play Spotify?
Consumer streaming covers personal listening, not playback in a business. Playing Spotify at a location still requires society licenses — and Spotify's own terms forbid commercial use.
Can I play well-known hits through Oktava?
No. The player only plays Oktava's own catalog — that is exactly what keeps it outside society repertoires and makes the certificate possible. If your concept depends on chart hits or a specific artist, you need society licenses, and Oktava isn't the right fit.
What if the internet goes down?
The player caches its channel ahead of time and keeps playing offline. Playback events queue locally and sync when the connection returns — the log stays complete.
I have several locations.
Each location gets its own player link and its own line in the subscription. Pricing is per location; excluding a location reduces the next charge automatically.
Can I cancel?
Anytime, from the dashboard. The subscription runs to the end of the paid period; after that the certificate is marked inactive on its public verification page.
Which countries does Oktava work in?
Oktava is sold in 20 countries — the certificate and country documents are issued for yours, and prices are set per country. Italy isn't supported, Denmark and Finland aren't available yet. The full list is at the bottom of this page.
Do I still need a VCPMC license for anything?
Not for the Oktava catalog. If your venue also plays radio, TV, Spotify or live music, those do need a VCPMC license — it covers music from the VCPMC repertoire. Many owners keep it simple: Oktava on the speakers, nothing else.
